Depression - how to get to grips with it!
INTRODUCTION
Before going to ask a doctor for a prescription to alleviate your depression, attempt to work it out more naturally. The depression that comes with any life changing event is real; it is not a chemical imbalance or an unnatural state, so treat it naturally. Exercise, volunteer at a church or hospital, read life affirming books, or listen to uplifting music. Take control of what you can control!
SOME TIPS TO HELP
1. Depression can be a Signal
Depressed feelings can tell you and or your practitioner that there are things in your health life which need to be checked out and treated if necessary.
Depression can accompany other ailments such as hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or diabetes.
Deficiencies in Vitamin C and or Vitamin E can be evidenced by depression.
Shallow breathing can result in emotional and physical imbalance by denying oxygen to the brain, resulting in symptoms of depression.
2. A good brisk walk, stepping out, but not running is good for general health, weight maintenance and loss, overcoming depression, and healthy bones. Studies have shown that walking burns calories, builds muscle and bone mass. The intake of oxygen improves the immune system and helps relieve depression action on the brain. When things are piling up, I find a good, brisk walk helps to clear my mind.
3. Medical researchers have speculated that nicotine or other smoking byproducts can have a depressive effect on the central nervous system. Other researchers have linked teen smoking with suicide in teens and depression in adults. It is unclear whether tobacco use is a cause or a result of depression.
4. Feelings of depression can be a normal response to the loss of a job or the death of a loved one. It is hard to feel on top of things all the time. But if the depression does not lift after about two weeks, or if it starts to impair relationships and your ability to think clearly or act intelligently, you may want to consider seeking help or looking for a good natural therapy or supplements to help with your condition.
5. Optimism is not only positive thinking. Effective optimism is based not only on feeling good, but on doing well. Parents can teach optimism to their children, as a lifelong inoculation against depression and suicide.
6. In certain regions of the world, the seasonal winds that blow have become legendary, bringing little short of misery and chaos to many of the local inhabitants. In these places it has been known for generations, that the winds bring feelings of anxiety, stress, depression and sleepless nights.
Statistical studies show that when these winds appear, more road accidents happen and suicide rates increase. So real is the problem that it has been known for judges to take this into consideration when sentencing and for hospitals to postpone some operations until they cease!
In fact winds like these are surprisingly common across the world: The Foehn is a dry southerly wind which blows from the Alps across Switzerland and southern Germany. There is the Siroccoin Italy and the Mistral in southern France. ( It is said that Winston Churchill avoided visiting the Mediterranean coast when the Mistral was blowing).
In the Middle East they have Sharav - also known to the Arabs as Hamsin (the fifty days wind). Western Canada and USA have the Chinook - and in the area around California blow the Santa Ana and winds known in Indian mythology as "The Bitter Winds".
The Swiss Meteorological Institute made extensive studies into the problems arising from their local wind, the Foehn, and in 1974 published a list of physical and mental effects it was found to cause. These included:
Body pains
Sick headaches
Dizziness
Nausea
Variations in body salts - sodium, calcium and magnesium
Respiratory problems
Asthma
Higher incidence of heart attacks
Slower reaction time
Irritation
Exhaustion
Listlessness
Anxiety
Depression
The big question was this:
What was so different about this air in these winds which caused such distress, compared to the air in the renowned health resorts of the mountains and lakesides, which had gained a reputation for their special qualities of relaxation and healing? It was research that many national and international organizations became involved in!
It was later discovered that this unique quality in the air is its electrical charge, which it carries in the form of ions
Paradoxically, if it carried a positive charge, people (and animals for that matter) felt negative and suffered the symptoms of the notorious oppressive winds. However if the electrical charge was negative it imparted a positive feeling of health and vitality.
